1923: Calvin Coolidge became the 30th President of the United States.

1939: Albert Einstein and Leo Szilard wrote a letter to Franklin D. Roosevelt, urging him to begin the Manhattan Project to develop a nuclear weapon.

1954: The small Portuguese enclave of Dadra and Nagar Haveli sandwiched between Maharashtra and Gujarat was liberated by Indian freedom fighters.

1987: Vishwanath Anand won the World Junior Chess Championship and became the first Asian player.
