1631: Mumtaz Mahal, the wife of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, died while giving birth to the 14th child. Taj Mahal was built in her memory. 

1885: Statue Of Liberty arrived in the New York Harbor on the French ship, named Isere. 

1944: Iceland was declared independent and became a republic.

1961: India’s first jet aircraft, HAL HF-24 Marut took its first flight. It was a fighter-bomber aircraft. 

1967: Nuclear weapons testing: China announced a successful test of its first thermonuclear weapon.

1987: The last of the Dusky Seaside Sparrow died and became extinct.
